Maggie’s Priorities
End Corruption and Increase Transparency
We deserve a government that listens to the people. Recently, 99.4% of council votes have been unanimous, which has led to very little debate or discussion on important issues. How is it that the council can pass massive pay raises for themselves and the mayor (running afoul of our state’s conflict of interest laws) without holding a single public hearing? How is it that the city can fund expensive religious statues without the council’s permission? Enough is enough.
To fight for more transparency, Maggie will:
Force roll call votes on important topics so voters know where all councilors stand.
Organize community and city council hearings so people can voice their opinions on issues that matter to them.
Start a regular newsletter so residents know what’s happening in City Hall and in their neighborhoods.
Protect Taxpayers
Another consequence of the lack of transparency is that our tax dollars are being spent on wasteful pet projects. Instead of spending a million dollars on religious statues, we should put that money towards improving our quality of life. Our taxes should be paying for classroom supplies and pothole repairs, not tax breaks for luxury developers.
To protect your tax dollars, Maggie will:
Work to repeal the huge pay raises that the council passed and involve the public in establishing a fair system for setting politicians’ pay. The mayor and council shouldn’t have raises that are exponentially higher than our teachers and firefighters.
Provide meaningful oversight on land purchases, borrowing, and spending so our tax dollars aren’t wasted or lost along the way.
Ask for regular updates from city departments to make sure that they are meeting residents’ needs.
Provide Prompt Constituent Services
We deserve to have a government that fixes problems quickly and efficiently, whether it’s filling potholes, clearing snow, or ensuring traffic moves at appropriate speeds. Maggie will be accessible and available for her constituents.
To make government work for you, Maggie will:
Answer emails and calls promptly. In fact, if you need something, you can call her at: 617-669-1832.
Direct city money away from wasteful side projects and developer giveaways and towards projects that meaningfully improve residents’ everyday lives.
Write a regular newsletter that provides updates on neighborhood goings-on.
Hold Developers Accountable
Too many of our neighbors are being priced out of Quincy. We need to have housing that is actually affordable, and the first step is to ensure that the developers who are building here abide by our rules. Maggie is rejecting donations from developers so they don’t have any influence over her.
To make Quincy more affordable, Maggie will:
Oppose tax breaks for luxury developers.
Push for developers to actually build affordable housing rather than paying nominal fees into a housing fund.
Support a transfer fee on high-end real estate sales to help finance lower- and middle-income housing.
Protect our Environment
Maggie has dedicated years to improving our environment, founding the Quincy Tree Alliance to protect the city’s tree canopy, serving on the board of the Quincy Climate Action Network, and chairing a city task force on food waste diversion.
To make Quincy greener, Maggie will:
Support a robust city composting program.
Advocate for more renewable energy for public buildings.
Work to expand protections for healthy trees in the city – particularly setting up rules to protect trees in our parks, which are not currently protected by our state shade tree law.
