Vote in the preliminary election!
It's a big election year in Quincy, and early voting started Saturday, Aug. 23!
There are 27 candidates running for nine council seats and three school committee seats (a recent record!). That's enough candidates to trigger a preliminary "knock-out" election on Sept. 2 for three open at-large council seats (to winnow the field from eight candidates to six) and one ward 6 seat (to winnow the field from four to two).
Winners of the preliminary will then face off in the general election on Nov. 4, as will candidates in other contested ward races and the candidates running for three open school committee seats.
City councilors serve an important oversight role in the city, voting on the city budget, property tax rates, and property purchases, in addition to acting as a voice for their constituents — us. And school committee members oversee the school budget, set school policies, and negotiate educator contracts.
These issues affect our everyday lives in huge ways — from the size of our tax bills to the quality of our roads and school buildings. Please research the candidates running for office so you can make an informed choice! Happily, there are multiple great sources of information, including:
